Veeam's licensing is simpler than it used to be, and its portability is a genuine advantage. The edition choice is where the money and the mistakes are.

How Veeam Universal Licensing works

  • One licence protects one workload, and it does not care what kind of workload that is — a virtual machine, a physical server, a cloud instance or a set of files.
  • Licences are portable. If you virtualise a physical server, or move a workload to the cloud, the licence follows it rather than being stranded. For a business part-way through a migration this is a real advantage over models tied to hardware.
  • It is subscription-based, so support is included for the term and the count can move as the estate does.
  • Different workload types consume different amounts, so workstations, Microsoft 365 users and file shares should be scoped explicitly rather than assumed equivalent to servers.

Which edition, honestly

  • Foundation is core backup and recovery with immutability — the essentials done properly, and genuinely enough for a large number of UAE SMEs.
  • Advanced adds monitoring, reporting and capacity analytics. Worth it when someone will actually read them; not worth it when nobody will.
  • Premium adds recovery orchestration and advanced security and threat capability. Right for larger estates, regulated environments and businesses that must demonstrate a tested recovery plan.
  • Essentials is priced for small environments and carries seat caps — fine if you are genuinely small and staying that way, a problem if you outgrow it mid-term.
  • The common mistake is reaching for Premium because it sounds safest. Buy the edition whose features you will configure and use.

Modern ransomware looks for the backup first, because encrypting it is what turns an incident into a payment. A backup a compromised administrator account can delete is not protection — it is a copy.

Getting Back — and Proving You Can Before You Need To


Recovery options that matter in practice

  • Instant VM recovery. A failed machine runs directly from the backup repository while the full restore happens underneath, turning a half-day outage into minutes.
  • Granular file and item-level restore. Almost every real restore request is one deleted file, one mailbox item or one SharePoint document — not a whole server.
  • Replication and orchestrated failover. A standby copy of critical machines kept in step, with a documented failover sequence. On the Premium edition the orchestration piece also produces the evidence auditors and insurers ask for.
  • Restore to different hardware or to cloud, which is the scenario businesses discover they cannot handle at precisely the worst moment.
  • Application-aware processing so databases and mail systems are quiesced properly and come back consistent rather than needing repair.

Why we insist on restore testing

  • A backup nobody has restored is a theory. It is the most common finding in our health checks, and the failure is usually silent and months old.
  • Test on a schedule, with the results written down, so there is evidence rather than an assumption.
  • Test the restore you would actually perform. If your risk is losing a server, restore a server. If your daily reality is a deleted file, test that.
  • Time it. Knowing a full restore takes six hours is useful planning information; discovering it during an outage is not.
  • Check coverage, not green ticks. Gaps are found by comparing the job list to the inventory — the server nobody added, the new share, the VM built last month.

Should we choose Veeam or NAKIVO?

Nifty IT is a partner with both, so we have no reason to push either. In broad terms, Veeam has the deeper enterprise feature set, the larger ecosystem and portable per-workload licensing that suits an estate in transition, and it is often the right answer for larger or more complex environments and for teams who already know it. NAKIVO frequently suits smaller and mid-sized UAE businesses well, particularly where installing directly onto a Synology or QNAP removes the need for a separate backup server, and where its licensing shape fits the host layout better. The deciding factors are your hypervisor mix, your host and workload counts, whether the NAS appliance model appeals, and the five-year cost of each structure — which we model rather than assert. Do we need to back up Microsoft 365 separately?

Yes. Microsoft replicates your data for service availability, which is not the same as backing it up for you. What their retention protects against is their infrastructure failing. What it does not reliably protect against is a user deleting a folder and nobody noticing for months, a departing employee clearing a mailbox, a compromised account destroying SharePoint content, or a retention policy quietly expiring something you needed. Recovery windows on the platform are limited and are not designed around your requirements. Backing up Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint separately is standard practice and is licensed per user.

What is an immutable backup, and do we need one?

An immutable backup cannot be modified or deleted until its retention period expires — not by ransomware, not by a compromised administrator account, not by accident. You need one, because modern ransomware deliberately targets backups first: encrypting or deleting them is what converts an incident into a payment demand. A backup that a stolen admin credential can delete is a copy, not protection. Veeam supports immutability on hardened Linux repositories, on object storage with object lock and on cloud targets, and in our experience it is the feature most often licensed and never actually enabled.

Is RAID or a storage snapshot enough?

No. RAID protects against a disk failing, and it writes deletions, corruption and ransomware straight through to every disk in the set. Storage snapshots are useful and fast for quick rollbacks, but they usually live on the same array as the data they protect, so losing the array loses both. Both are availability features; backup is a recovery feature. A proper design uses them together — snapshots for speed, backup for recovery, an immutable copy for ransomware, and an offsite copy for the day the building is the problem.

How long does a Veeam deployment take?

The installation is quick; the design and the first full backup set the schedule. For a typical UAE SME with a handful of hosts, expect the design conversation and the health check first, then deployment and configuration, then a first full backup that runs over a weekend or several nights depending on data volume and where the copies are going. Cloud or offsite seeding is the item most likely to extend it, since it is limited by your internet connection. We schedule the initial full backup deliberately rather than letting it saturate your circuit during a working day.

Can you migrate us from our current backup product?

Yes, and the important part is the overlap. We build and verify the new backup chain before decommissioning the old one, so there is never a window where the only copies of your data live in a product being switched off. Historical restore points generally cannot be migrated between backup products — that is true across the industry — so we agree in advance how long the old repository is retained in a readable state and what happens if something needs restoring from it. Coverage on the new platform is then verified device by device against your inventory rather than assumed from a job list.

How often should backups be tested?

On a schedule that exists and that somebody owns — that matters more than the exact frequency. Quarterly is a reasonable baseline for most UAE SMEs, more often for critical systems, and always after a significant change to the environment. Test the restore you would actually perform rather than a convenient one, and time it. On the Premium edition the orchestration capability can automate and document recovery testing, which is worth having if you need to show an auditor or an insurer evidence rather than assurances.

What is the difference between backup and replication?

Backup produces point-in-time copies you can go back to — yesterday, last week, last month — and is what you use when data is lost, corrupted or encrypted. Replication maintains a standby copy of a machine kept close to current, and is what you use when a whole system or site fails and you need to be running again quickly. They solve different problems, and replication is not a backup: if ransomware encrypts the source, a current replica gives you an encrypted standby. Most UAE SMEs need solid backup with immutability first, and replication only for the handful of systems where hours of downtime is genuinely unaffordable.

Can you manage the backup environment for us?

Yes, and it is optional. Ongoing cover means job results are monitored so a failure raises an alert rather than sitting in a console nobody opens, restore tests are scheduled and documented, capacity is tracked before a repository fills, coverage is checked against your inventory as new machines appear, and your subscription renewal is raised in good time rather than on the day.
